Sask Sport Announces Nominees for the July Athlete of the Month Award
The following athletes are nominees for the Sask Sport Inc. July Athlete of the Month Award:
Eric Cameron, 44, Moose Jaw - Special Olympics, Powerlifting: Cameron competed at the 2006 Special Olympics National Summer Games in Brandon, MB as part of Team Sask. He broke the national record in the Dead Lift, capturing two gold medals for the 52kg category in the bench press and the dead lift. Due to Cameron's accomplishments he will have a chance to compete at the National level. Cameron was nominated by Special Olympics, Saskatchewan.
Keira Frie, 18, Saskatoon - Athletics: As a member of Team Sask, Frie participated at the Canadian Paralympic Nationals held in London, ON. Frie placed 3rd in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 1500m and placed 2nd in the 800m. Also as a member of the Canadian Team she participated at the IWAS World Junior Athletic Championships held in Dublin, Ireland and achieved four first place finishes in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m. As a result of the past month's achievements, Frie will participate in the Senior Nationals in Ottawa, Ont.; the Swiss Championships in Arbon, Switzerland and was named to the National team competing at the IPC World Championships in Assen, Netherlands. Frie was nominated by Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Assoc.
Duncan Gilchrist, 18, Saskatoon - Rowing: Gilchrist was named National Junior CanAmMex Team in order to compete at the Regatta held in Mexico City. Gilchrist won two gold medals, one in the men's four and one in the men's eight. 150 rowers from 6 countries were represented with 36 in Gilchrist's category level. Gilchrist will tryout for the U23 National Team next year. He was nominated by Sask Rowing.
Cole Miller, 13, Regina - Diving: Miller represented Regina Diving Club by competing at the Speedo Junior National Diving Championships in Edmonton, AB. Miller won two gold medals, one in the 1m and one in the 3m events, and a bronze medal in the platform. Due to his achievements Miller was named to the Junior National Diving Team and was named the most outstanding male diver in the 12-13 age categories. He is a favourite at the Canada/US Challenge in May 2007 and an identified athlete for the Team Sask Diving team at the 2007 Western Canada Games. Miller was nominated by Sask Diving Inc.
