Sask Sport Inc. January Athlete of the Month nominees announced
The following athletes are nominees for the Sask Sport Inc. January Athlete of the Month Award:
- Tannis Hancock, 22, Saskatoon.
Hancock won the gold medal at the Oz Day 10K Road Race in Sydney. She also earned three bronze medals in the 400m, 200m, and 100m at the Summer Down Under Track Meet, also held at Sydney. There were nine competitors in all events and athletes from 10 countries were represented. Due to this accomplishment, Hancock earned a position on the Provincial Team, and has an opportunity in the 2006 Canadian Paralympic Track and Field Championships in London. She was nominated by the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association.
- Mandy Selzer Women's Curling Team.
The team of Mandy Selzer (skip), Eirn Selzer (third), Kristen Mitchell (second), and Megan Selzer (lead) won the Provincial title against Saskatoon, which earned them the right to represent Saskatchewan at the M&M Canadian Junior Women's Curling Championships. The team then went on to win the Canadian title. There were 12 teams represented at the national championships. The team will now compete at the World Junior Women's Curling Championships in Jeonju, Korea, in March. The team was nominated by the Saskatchewan Curling Association.
- Tremaine Miles, 17, Regina.
Miles won the silver medal at the Junior National Boxing Championships in Ste-Hycinthe, Que. There were athletes from 10 provinces in the competition and three in her weight division. Due to this accomplishment, Miles may be able to compete at the Indigenous Games, Ringside Tournament, and Western Canadian Championships. Miles was nominated by Boxing Saskatchewan Inc.
